Netflix’s strong run of form continued with its latest creepy series Dirty John.

Alexandra Cunningham has created the show as an adaptation of Christopher Goffard’s podcast from 2017. The original Dirty John followed real-life con artist and sociopath John Meehan, while the show follows suit.

There’s plenty of drama and deception as we delve deeper into the dark mind of ‘Dirty’ John Meehan. Already compared to Netflix’s chilling YOU, which is a huge achievement giving the hype surrounding the show.

Netflix’s new documentary Dirty John, The Dirty Truth gives an insight into the real-life story of conman John Meehan and those around him.

It will include: “interviews with former girlfriends, ex-wives and police detectives detail the chilling decades-long criminal career of serial predator John Meehan.”

Meehan was a serial offender, both as a conman and stalker. He preyed on women and and among his victims were ex-wives Tonia Bales and Debra Newell.

In the documentary, Bales recalls seeing wedding videos for the first time, and watching one of Meehan’s friends refer to him as “filthy John.” She had questioned her husband about the nickname but he simply said that they had had too much to drink and were being silly.

The couple went on to work together and had two daughter, before they got divorced.

Meehan was ultimately killed by Newell’s daughter, Terra Newell. Meehan had began to stalk Debra’s daughters and had attempted to kidnap Terra.

However Terra managed to fight back, kicking the knife out of his hand and stabbing him 13 times. He later died in hospital.

“I got pushed down onto the ground as he is on his knees just trying to stab me,” Terra explained on Dirty John, Dirty Truth.

“He dropped the knife and it landed exactly right next to me on my right-hand side.”

According to Deadline a second season of Dirty John is in the pipeline for Netflix, though the new season would follow a new cast and follow a ‘different and self-contained story.’
